Seinen Namen verdankt er seinen blauen Füßen und seiner scheinbaren Ungeschicklichkeit (Tölpel, siehe Tollpatsch); der Blaufußtölpel ist allerdings ein gewandter Flieger und Taucher beim Beutefang.
