Die Östliche Kleinaugenotter (Cryptophis nigrescens) zählt innerhalb der Familie der Giftnattern (Elapidae) zur Gattung Cryptophis. Die wissenschaftliche Erstbeschreibung erfolgte im Jahre 1862 durch den deutschen Zoologen Albert Günther als Hoplocephalus nigrescens. Zeitweise wurde die Östliche Kleinaugenotter der Gattung Rhinoplocephalus zugerechnet.
