Diese kleine Lerchenart besiedelt weite Teile der südlichen Paläarktis von Nordwestafrika und Spanien bis China. In West- und Mitteleuropa befinden sich die nördlichsten Brutvorkommen in Mittelfrankreich und in Ungarn. Die Kurzzehenlerche bewohnt trockene, baum- und buschlose Offenlandschaften wie Trockenrasen und Halbwüsten sowie Brachland und Ödflächen in der Kulturlandschaft.
