Der Schlammteufel (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) ist die einzige Art der monotypischen Gattung Cryptobranchus. Er ist neben dem Japanischen Riesensalamander (Andrias japonicus) und den vier Riesensalamanderarten in China die sechste rezente Art aus der Familie der Riesensalamander (Cryptobranchidae) und lebt in Nordamerika in großen Fließgewässern mit steinigem Grund.
